Two Perspectives

I recently came across a poem about bees, written by Paul Fleischman. In his children’s book, “Joyful Noise: Poems for Two Voices,” Mr. Fleischman shares the ins and outs of a bee: one voiced by a worker and the other by the queen. In the two column poem, there are moments when the bees’ voices are unified. For example, when the poem begins, they harmonize, “Being a bee.” Their voices quickly diverge as the queen continues alone, “is a joy.” Shortly thereafter, the worker bee shares, “is a pain.” The poem chronicles the queen’s pampered life concurrently with the labor intensive workday. Each sharing the life of a honeybee…from their respective perspective.

I share this YouTube video done by middle schoolers to remind us all that we our lives are ruled by perspectives. Some days you are the proverbial queen and there will be others when you are the lowly worker.

One of my mother’s favorite lines to say recently is “Change the way you look at things, and the things you look at change.” Simple truism.

It’s all about perspective.

What in your life can benefit from a change in perspective? Your job? Your significant other? Your dreams and goals? Your current situation (whatever that may entail)?

It’s all about perspective.
